What is a counterbalance forklift — and who needs training?
A counterbalance forklift carries its load on front forks, balanced by a counterweight built into the rear of the chassis. With no reach legs or outriggers it can approach racking and vehicles directly, work indoors and out, and handle everything from pallets to packs of timber — which is why it remains the default truck across UK industry.
Under HSE’s L117 Approved Code of Practice and PUWER, anyone who operates a counterbalance truck at work must be adequately trained, and the employer must be able to demonstrate it. Our AITT-accredited counterbalance courses cover novice, experienced, conversion and refresher routes — delivered on your own trucks, at your premises.

How long does a forklift training course take?
It depends on the course type. Novice courses take 3–5 days, experienced operator courses 1–3 days, conversion courses 1–2 days, and refresher courses just 1 day.
